Public Diplomacy Manager, DFAT

 

Contract: Permanent
Full Time: 36.75 hours per week
Starting Salary: £60,797 per annum 
Security Assessment: Negative Vetting Level 2 (Australian National)

About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

 

About the Job

The Australian High Commission is looking for an exceptional Public Affairs Manager. This is an exciting, varied and high profile role which will offer the successful applicant the opportunity to lead on the development and delivery of the High Commission’s Public Diplomacy strategy. This will include the High Commission’s public diplomacy strategy, media strategy, and management of the Post’s social media platforms.

Whilst the Public Affairs Manager is responsible for shaping the strategic thinking and direction of the High Commission’s public diplomacy portfolio this is equally a very ‘hands-on’ role. The successful candidate will be expected to balance providing expert public diplomacy advice (in consultation with senior officials in Canberra and at Post) with the management of a small team responsible for the delivery of the High Commission’s public diplomacy activities.

The successful candidate will:

  • Ability to manage, organise and negotiate the Public Diplomacy personnel and financial resources and ensure financial probity requirements are met.
  • Provide direction for Post’s public diplomacy strategy and plan, implement and evaluate its engagement, partnerships advocacy activities.
  • Experience in setting priorities for a small yet busy team and managing the work flow to ensure efficiency and delivery of agreed outputs and goals.
  • Experience in providing strategic direction and guidance for the High Commission’s public engagement, partnerships advocacy activities.

     

SELECTION CRITIERA

A. Ability to supervise the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the High Commission’s Public Diplomacy strategy. 

B. Demonstrate expert knowledge of the public affairs, media and cultural sectors and indicate how you would establish contacts to build on the range of interests in the United Kingdom.

C. Have excellent programme management skills; effectively managing resources, competing priorities and multiple projects to successful delivery.

D. Ability to effectively manage complex stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally, with the ability to influence, negotiate and represent the organisation at a senior level.

E. Ability to manage, organise and negotiate the organisation’s personnel and financial resources and ensure financial probity requirements are met.

 

The successful candidate will be flexible and prepared to contribute to the wider development of the work of the Australian High Commission.

In addition to salary, the Australian High Commission offers a range of benefits including a 9% non-contributory pension scheme, flex-time, 20 days leave in addition to UK and Australian public holidays to a total of 14 days and child care vouchers.
