Follow these steps if you are applying for:
- First child passport
- Child aged between 16 and 17 years (regardless of whether they have held an Australian passport before)
- New child passport to replace a lost, stolen or cancelled passport
- New child passport to replace an emergency passport
- New child passport to update their name and/or gender
Click on the below link to the Australian Passport Office website, then select Apply or Renew and create an account.
Answer the questions to tell the system that you are applying for a new passport overseas. You will be directed to complete the Overseas Passport Application Form.
When you have completed the form online, come back to this page to follow the rest of the steps.
A guarantor is someone who will be named on the application form. They will sign the form and one of the passport photos to confirm the child's identity.
The guarantor must meet all of the following criteria:
- They are at least 18 years old
- They are not related to the applicant by birth or marriage
- They do not live with the applicant
- They are willing and able to speak to us about the application if needed
The guarantor must also meet one of the following criteria:
- Hold a current Australian passport
OR
- Be currently employed in one of the following occupations:
- Chartered/Certified Accountants
- Chartered Professional Engineers
- Judges, Barristers and Solicitors
- Registered Medical Practitioners (Doctors and GPs only), Dentists, Pharmacists
- Registered Nurses, Chiropractors, Optometrists, Physiotherapists and Psychologists
- Registered Veterinary Surgeons
- Members of Parliament, elected City, County and District Councillors
- Police Officers with at least five years continuous service
- Members currently serving in the regular Australian or British Defence Force with at least five years continuous service
- Ministers of Religion and Marriage Celebrants
- Teachers - full-time, who have been teaching for more than five years
- Civil Servants/Local Government employees - full-time, who have been employed continuously for at least five years by their current employer
- Bank Branch Managers - manager of a High Street bank, but not managers of investment or business branches, building societies, bank travel centres, loan centres or line mangers within a bank
The guarantor can be located in any country. They do not need to be in the United Kingdom or Australia.
After you have completed the form online you will need to print it. Check the entire form has been printed and there is nothing missing at the top or bottom of the form, like the barcodes or boxes.
Check the details on the form are correct and make any amendments by hand, signing/initialling next to any changes.
Using a black pen, the following sections must be completed by hand:
Section 11 - your guarantor must sign, date, and write their contact phone number in the declaration
Section 15 - both parents* must sign and date in front of a witness.
- Your witness must sign and provide their name and contact phone number in the declaration.
Section 17 - one parent must sign, date, write their full name, and tick the Parent 1, Parent 2 or Other person with parental responsibility for the applicant box
Section 18 - If the child is 10 years of age or over, they must sign this box with the signature that will appear on their new passport
- Check the signature is fully within the signature box
- If any part of the signature is outside the box or is touching the edges of the box, you will need to print and sign the form again
- If the child is under 10 years of age, or is unable to sign, place an 'X' in the applicable box to right of the section.
Check that all dates are within the last six months and do not use correction fluid or tape on the application form.

Australian passport photos are different to UK passport photos. Please check with your photographer if they can take photos that meet our guidelines. Do not use a photobooth.

Using a black pen, your guarantor must write the following on the back of one photo:
"This is a true photo of"
Applicant's full name
Guarantor's signature
We accept original documents only. Photocopies and certified copies are not accepted.
You must provide both proof of citizenship for your child and proof of identity for the lodging parent.
Proof of citizenship - Child
You must provide one the following:
- Australian birth certificate*
- Required if the child was born in Australia
- You must also provide:
- One of the child's previous Australian passports (not an emergency passport)
- One of the parent's Australian birth certificates
- One of the parent's Australian citizenship certificates, dated before the child was born
- One of the parent's Australian passports that was valid when the child was born
- The child's own Australian citizenship certificate if you have none of the above
OR
- Australian citizenship certificate
- If your child was born overseas
- If you do not have any other documents to confirm your child's Australian citizenship
- AND The child's non-Australian birth certificate*
*If there is only one parent listed on the child's birth certificate, please see the Additional Documents tab below.
Proof of identity - Parent
- The lodging parent must provide valid photo ID. This is the parent who attends the appointment to submit the application. We accept either a driving licence or passport (Australian or non-Australian).
- The lodging parent must also provide valid proof of address. We accept a valid driving licence, motor vehicle registration or insurance, property rates notice, lease agreement, utility bill or bank statement (less than 12 months old).
You must submit the child's application in person. There is no option to submit the application by post. No one else can submit the child's application on behalf of the parents.
At least one parent must attend to lodge the application in person. The lodging parent does not have to be an Australian citizen. Both parents are welcome to attend, however, only one parent is required to lodge a child’s application.
Children aged 15 years and younger are not required to attend.
Children aged 16-17 years must attend the appointment with the lodging parent.
You must book an appointment. There is no walk-in service.
Do not bring any additional family members or friends with you.
You must clear through security checks to enter our building. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment time.

For children aged 15 years and younger, the fee for a 5-year passport is AUD$298.
For children aged 16 and 17, the fee for a 10-year passport is AUD$502.
Payment is processed at the end of your appointment once the application has been checked. The payment receipt will be emailed to the email address listed on the application form.
Payment is processed by credit or debit card and we accept VISA, Mastercard, and AMEX. Contactless is not available.
We take payment in Australian Dollars only. You may be charged a fee by your bank if you use a UK card.
Passports are currently taking up to six weeks from the day we process payment.
The new passport will be posted to your child's UK residential address that you list on their application form. We send passports by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which is a registered and signed-for service.
There is no priority service or fast track option available. If the applicant has urgent travel within three weeks, please CLICK HERE.
We will give the old passport back to you at the end of the appointment.
If the passport is still in date, then your child can continue to travel while we process the application. It will be automatically cancelled on our system 30 days after the new passport is issued.
You should keep the passport for your records. Do not dispose of it.

There are additional forms to be completed and submitted with the application, which can be downloaded from the above link. The additional forms must be provided even when renewing the passport.
You must also bring the original court order with you to your appointment.

You must also complete a B7 No Further Court Orders Form confirming there are no later court orders or pending court proceedings in relation to the child. This must be done even when renewing the passport. You can download the form from the AUSTRALIAN PASSPORT WEBSITE.

You must complete a B8 One Parent Only on Child's Birth Certificate Form to confirm whether there are any other persons with parental responsibility who are not listed on the birth certificate. This must be done even when renewing the passport. You can download the form from the AUSTRALIAN PASSPORT WEBSITE.

You must complete a B9 Child Without Full Parental Consent Form to confirm the details of the non-consenting parent and the circumstances. This must be done even when renewing the passport.
